I lived through the whole Iraq/Afghanistan war timeline. Sure there were some protestors here and there. But there weren’t music concerts being taken over by anti-American banners. Every time you went on a social media post people weren’t spamming American flags with the word “genocide” next to it. People weren’t constantly spamming “Free Iraq” or “Free Afghanistan.” 

And this is after over 1,000,000 million people were killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. 

But this isn’t supposed to be a “whataboutism.” It’s a genuine question as to why it seems like nobody gives an absolute fuck about any other war or genocide or whatever but suddenly are hyper focused on this conflict to the minute detail. I can find you plenty of photos of dead Iraqi kids, but nobody cares. And that’s the problem.

I am pro Israel, but I’m also a mother, and it is hard to see a child or a baby suffering, no matter where they’re from. Yeah I want these babies to be fed. I also don’t want them to be raised to hate Jews. But an infant shouldn’t be held accountable for what happened in 2023.

There are a lot of zionist Jews care deeply about Israel who are also extremely disturbed by the lack of food reaching Gaza. They are concerned about the actions of the current Israeli government over many things, not just the food distribution, but are able to critique with specificity and without hate (bc the goal is to make Israel better). You have to know where to look for nuanced, compassionate voices who are extremely familiar with Israeli politics. This is something I've been struggling with myself. One of the things that turned me off of the progressive left (as a progressive leftist) was seeing how many of my friends ooh and ahh over my 2 year old but justified the murder of the Bibas boys. Kfir Bibas was 3 days older than my son, and my partner and I were considering Aliyah in 2022. My own friends might have been justifying the murder of my son, my partner, and myself.


I refuse to do the same thing to a Palestinian child, no matter the crimes of their government. No baby deserves to starve and to hand-wave away that starvation is a betrayal of every value I hold. 


It's not right or fair, but every government has to weigh the virtue of a proportional response (you can tell I watched too much West Wing as a kid). Clearly what's being tried *is* dismantling Hamas, but I don't believe one life can be traded for another--how many children are the Hamasniks worth? 


I support Israel defending itself, but how far is too far? I don't really have an answer.


EDIT: I don't have an answer but I do have a suggestion. The western powers can recognise a Palestinian state once all the hostages are returned AND the remainder of Hamas disbands/submits to the ICC for judgement for war crimes for October 7. Return the hostages, disband, do teshuva, and they get a state. The ball is in their court, I'm tired of this nonsense.

War is hell. Anyone who thinks that a country can fight a perfectly clean war where no civilian is harmed knows nothing about war. By all accounts, this is actually a considerably clean war. 

“War is hell” is not an excuse to target civilians, but rather an acknowledgment that when you are fighting a war in densely populated urban area against an enemy whose strategy is to maximize their own civilian suffering, non-combatants will die. Moreover, this has to be the first war since World War 2 where neighboring countries actively refused to shelter civilians caught in the crossfire, as Egypt and Jordan are refusing to do now. This makes it extremely difficult to move non-combatants away from the battle space. Another first is the outright refusal of the defeated entity (Hamas) to surrender. They are clearly beaten and could end this war tomorrow if they wanted to. 

It’s also worth noting that had Israel started this war, the conversation would be different, but this is a war of necessity — Israel was attacked by Hamas and Hamas must be eliminated.

I hate to see noncombatants going hungry and suffering as well. I don't see how limiting food aid is a smart or decent way to attack Hamas. 

Has anyone determined how much aid has entered Gaza since Oct 2023 and whether that should have been enough to feed everyone in Gaza? I'm not sure how much of the problem is Israel not allowing enough aid in versus the aid not getting where it needs to be.

It's a war. There's a reason people say war is hell. And this is a war in a densely populated urban area in which one side is seeking to maximize casualties amongst its own civilian population. Understand that every image you see -- and they are horrific -- is exactly what Hamas wants. Also understand that there is extreme media bias against Israel. They are not giving you the full story, like the fact that Hamas actively prevents Gazans from getting aid or the fact that there are many tons of it waiting to be distributed. 


Israel is a country, flawed like any other. They're certainly far from perfect. But there are probably dozens of other horrors taking place all over the world right now. The pictures you see of the starving children have proven again and again to be from Yemen/Syria, AI or even staged using terminally ill patients. In many cases, the "child" is already swaddled to the point that no one can see that it's actually a doll. 


Ask yourself why the "famine" is suddenly worse now that the UN/Hamas no longer has monopoly, especially when we've seen and heard from Gazans themselves that they can finally get aid without having to pay for it. Yes, there us hardship and civilians are always the ones to suffer in war. The task of providing aid to large crowds with Hamas operatives swarming about is a logistical nightmare and there will be shortages until the network has been properly established. It is important to remember, however, that neither the IDF or the GHF are claiming famine and the data does not support that there is ongoing famine. 


It is important that we keep level-headed and rational so we do not fall for the propaganda. The world was always turned against us and we should not rely on the words of antisemites.

The NGOs complaining about access also have hundreds of trucks they can’t move because they can’t find drivers willing to drive into the Strip.

UN aid being impartial means the exact opposite of what you are saying. They in no way are allowed to be feeding the military of any one of the warring parties. So when you say that Hamas is the government and is responsible for distributing aid you are wrong. The aid organizations are supposed to distribute the aid and in fact should be reporting any instance of Hamas taking or diverting any of that aid. If Israel would actually make concrete steps to ensure that Arab countries would not be signing up for ethnic cleansing and massacres of Palestinians by helping Israel secure aid distribution then your argument would have basis, but Israel has steadfast refused to accommodate Arab countries concerns of this and so why should Arab countries fall on the sword for Israel to refuse to take any steps to a two state solution?

1. UN had not been honest. It had said "Hamas is not getting or stealing the aid", UN had downplayed Hamas involvement. UN has not been transparent, so how many tons of aid and food had been supplied, given or taken by Hamas ? 

2. The aid are donated and meant for Gazan civilians. It was nevet meant for Hamas. UN has an obligation to its donor and its misleading donors to accept donations and diverting aid to Hamas, a terrorist organization. Is the UN supporting and supplying terrorists ? Has UN informed its donors that X amount of aid is being given to Hamas ? Can donors opt out that their donations could end up in the hands of Hamas ?

3. UN states that Gaza is an occupied territory of Israel. Partly because Israel controls Gaza. UN also said it sent a list of all UN staff list to Israel every year for approval.... UN recognizes Israel as the occupying power in Gaza not Hamas. UN does not recognize Hamas. AFAIK, UN only recognize Palestinian Authority as the legitimate government of the State of Palestine including Gaza, not Hamas.

4. UN had repeatedly been biased. UN had prematurely concluded there is a genocide even before the ICJ made a final ruling, it bypass the ICJ court, taking the law into its own hands, interference in the legal process. UN had also made repeated false warnings 14,000 babies could die in 48 hours,  lies. 

5. UN had said there is no safe place in Gaza, yet we only recently found out Deir-al-Balah had not had Israeli ground attack until a few days ago. Many UN staffs, coordinators, suspected terrorists and hostages are in Deir-al-Balah. We never heard about 400 food distribution sites until early 2025, when Gaza Humanitarian Foundation was floated. If you search for information on 400 food distribution sites back in 2023 or 2024, cannot find. Lack transparency. Always said no food no food...OMG Israel hit a cafe where people including journalists were hiding. No food and yet there is cafe selling pizza in Gaza ? WTF, people eating in cafes, in restaurants ?

6. There were Hamas tunnels, assets near or in or within UN facilities, UN schools, UN hospitals, UN refugee camps, etc...

7. Why the f$#@ are people buying and selling donated food/aid in Gaza ? Arent those humanitarian aid suppose to be given to the Gaza civilians for FREE ? If the Gaza civilians dont need them, UN is suppose to give it to someone else who needs them, not to give them so people could profit off selling donated items ? Corruption and nepotism

There's no lack of food. There's a lack of humanitarian access to the Strip. Gulf states simply won't be allowed in, because GHF is a control mechanism. That's the whole answer.

Regarding the rest of your post:

It's worth noting, and not said enough, that there's not even real evidence for the idea that Hamas steals aid in any significant quantities. Nor is there a proposed way that selling this aid at marked up prices really changes anything in this conflict anyway. Like, Hamas is the state. They have access to various funds, all kinds of infrastructure, and an armed wing. It's a lie of course with zero credible sources, but Israel goes around saying how all Hamas leaders are billionaires anyway. I don't see why Hamas would bother making a few shekels on overpriced bags of flour when they could just requisition what they need from Gazans anyway. Who would stop them?

Or like, is there some big expensive gun shop in the center of Gaza and the state itself can't afford to shop there? And the state has no access to any money?

There's no way of importing weapons or anything else into Gaza. If Hamas sells some flour, what are gonna buy with the profits that they don't already own, can't simply take, and which would really give them a leg up in the war?

Also let's note that GHF doesn't actually do any checking about whether someone picking up aid is Hamas anyway, so the whole narrative about stolen aid is really just a cover story so that Israel can weaponize food and turn it on or off at will as they did with water, electricity, and border crossings themselves...

It sounds like there are some areas of Gaza where distribution is screwed up. It isn't that aid is blocked, it's that logistics is hard and doesn't always go according to plan.

The Palestinians are being used and kept in place to maintain a proxy war. Neighboring countries who are predominantly Muslim like Lebanon and Syria are reluctant if not entirely opposed to Palestinians settling in their countries. Hamas doesn’t want any real peace. Their leadership lives in countries like Qatar, away from the violence and free to siphon most of the money and aid that the world gives to the Palestinians. Then they have Hamas soldiers convert supplies meant to create water and sewer systems like pipes into IEDs. The Palestinians live in squalor not for lack of aid, but for all the ways Hamas exploits the situation. Yet the media makes it look like it’s entirely the fault of the IDS instead.

The Palestinian people need to overthrow Hamas.

Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2006.

Gaza elected Hamas and launched missiles at Israel.

Back in WW2 when the allies fought the nazis, they weren't much concerned with human rights. All they wanted to do is to beat the nazi regime.

In todays day and age, almost everything is so fragile in politics. Can't do this, can't do that, etc. And Hamas is loving it because they now have a lot of indirect support.

While it is true that human rights have in the recent months been violated a lot by both sides, if Israel stops now Hamas will just grow back. We need a good with global oversight solution to stop the war and simultaneously stop Hamas from being able to grow again. Perhaps something similar to the denazification of Germany.

You do realise that a core Palestinian political value is the “right to return”, right? 

That means some of them do want to return to their ancestral homes within territory that is now Israel. They see it as their right. 

But Israel won’t let them, because it fears demographic change. So much for “offering people careers and growth” - certainly not if the people are Palestinian.

The Palestinians under the Peel Plan were offered all of the Negev, Gaza and 96% of the West Bank and they turned it down, Palestinians can't take yes for an answer. In 1948, the UNSCOP proposed the partition plan, Israel accepted it, Arab countries declared war and did not even try to come up with a counterproposal or using any means of diplomacy.
